Vaginismus symptoms are quite typical of sexual dysfunction. The discomfort usually manifests itself when sexual intercourse, gynecological examination, or when trying to put a tampon-like object in the vaginal area. The first discomfort felt during vaginismus is contractions and spasms in the vaginal area, which may tend to spread. These contractions are caused by the involuntary contraction of the pelvic muscles surrounding the vaginal area. The second negative symptom felt during this discomfort is the pain that the woman feels to the point of ending sexual intercourse or vaginal examination. What should be kept in mind here is the fact that if vaginismus is not intervened and treated, let alone getting better, the situation will get worse.
Before examining the symptoms of vaginismus, it is useful to give a few important preliminary information about the disorder.
In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to say that there is more than one type of vaginismus, since the forms, symptoms and causes of vaginismus vary from patient to patient.
Just like the manifestations and symptoms of the disease, the pain felt during contractions varies from person to person, from mild to unbearable.
Vaginismus can be caused by many physical, social or psychological-physiological reasons. Even mood changes or the side effects of some medications can trigger the discomfort.
Vaginismus is an absolutely and permanently treatable condition. As the disease is caused by both emotional and physical reasons, the treatment of vaginismus includes both physical and psychological exercises.
Vaginismus is one of the most common sexual processing disorders, the symptoms of which typically present with pain and cramps. This disorder affects a woman's chance of having a healthy sexual relationship, and although it is not clearly reflected in the society, it is a situation that can cause most marriages to continue without sexual intercourse or even to end. On the other hand, the pelvic muscles responsible for vaginismus are responsible for urination, defecation and childbirth as well as sexual intercourse. And the treatment of the disease is done by trying to provide conscious control of these muscles.
We mentioned at the beginning of the article that vaginismus can have many forms. Here, we will try to make a classification in terms of the way they appear and the way they operate. We can examine Vaginismus under two headings according to the way it occurs:
1-Primary Vaginismus: We use this condition for the condition of people who have had vaginismus since their first sexual experience or the first vaginal examination, in other words, from the moment they knew themselves. This condition usually occurs during the first attempt to have sexual intercourse, and often sexual intercourse cannot occur. Although this problem manifests itself in sexual intercourse, these people usually cannot have a vaginal examination, and even respond to the placement of any object in their vaginal area with contraction and pain reactions. In people with this condition, the symptoms of vaginismus may be accompanied by other symptoms such as pain and spasm, as well as contraction of the whole body and difficulty in breathing.
2.Secondary Vaginismus: This term is used for the case of people who were able to have healthy and comfortable sexual intercourse before and who could have a vaginal examination show symptoms of vaginismus after a specific event. This specific event can be caused by an infection, a trauma to this area, hormonal changes such as menopause, birth, surgery or problems with the spouse. While patients with secondary vaginismus may have previously had a vaginal examination in addition to sexual intercourse, they may have difficulty in having a gynecological examination after this situation.
Another distinction in vaginismus is about what patients with vaginismus respond to or not. According to this:
1-General Vaginismus: This is the situation in which the patient shows signs of vaginismus, regardless of what is tried to be put into the vaginal area. These patients cannot have sexual intercourse and cannot be in gynecological examination.
2- Situational Vaginismus: In this type of vaginismus, only the symptoms of vaginismus are exhibited against a certain situation, while there is no problem in other situations. For example, these patients can have a gynecological examination even though they cannot have sexual intercourse.
