Cesarian Section

Cesarean section is the delivery by the physician by surgical incision of the anterior abdominal wall and uterus. Cesarean section should not be considered as an option, but should be considered as a complementary or life-saving option when normal delivery cannot occur or when serious problems are encountered.

Today, the most common causes of cesarean section are previous cesarean sections, situations related to the position of the baby, placement problems of the placenta, premature separation of the placenta, failure of normal delivery (non-progressive labor) and distress during delivery (decreased heart rate) in the baby.

In cases such as the baby's miscarriage or previous cesarean section, the cesarean section is called planned cesarean section. For example, ACOG (American Society of Gynecology Obstetrics) recommends 39+1 cesarean section if vaginal delivery is not considered after cesarean section in case of previous cesarean section. Cesarean section performed in case of a problem that develops while waiting for a normal delivery is defined as an emergency cesarean section.

Is Cesarean Delivery or Vaginal Birth Safe?

There is no single answer to this question. For example, the complication rate in planned cesarean section in first deliveries is lower than in normal delivery. However, repeated cesarean sections, especially 5 and above, are very risky. If the baby is standing on the side, forcing a normal birth will be fatal for both the baby and the mother. In other words, the birth decision should be completely personal. Moreover, it is not always possible to determine the right form of birth for the person in advance. If there is no absolute contraindication (prohibition), normal delivery should be allowed, and if a problem develops, cesarean section should be started.

How Should Cesarean Anesthesia Be Applied?

There are general anesthesia and regional (partial) anesthesia options in cesarean section. Regional anesthesia includes epidural, spinal and combined epidural-spinal options. Regional anesthesia is preferred because it has fewer complications than general anesthesia, provides a more comfortable delivery for the pregnant and is safer for the baby. Of course, there are personal circumstances and it is the anesthesiologist's responsibility to evaluate and decide on them.

Is Post Cesarean Section Important?

Post-cesarean care is an important stage of cesarean section. The first job of the healthcare team is to ensure health safety after cesarean section, which is a serious operation. The mother's blood pressure, pulse, bleeding, amount of urine, and serums to be taken are monitored. Movement of the postpartum mother, pain relief support, and breastfeeding counseling should be provided.

During the post-cesarean section, it is important for the puerperant to drink plenty of fluids and be mobile, to reduce complications and to return to daily life as soon as possible. Family support is very important for the mother who is trying to cope with both the operation and the puerperium difficulties.
